Sponsor a paw, support a pup this October!

October is for the dogs!

At Old Town Books, we’re celebrating Adopt a Shelter Dog Month with our friends at Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. From paw prints on our walls to bagels and beagles in the bookstore, this month is all about honoring the animals who bring joy, companionship, and love into our lives - while raising vital support for pets still waiting for their forever homes.

During the month of October when you visit us in the store you’ll see a wall with bright orange paw prints. You can sponsor a paw print for $5, $10, or $20 and we’ll post it on the wall in honor of a pet - or person! - of your choosing. All donations will support Homeward Trails and their work saving animals in need.

And this year? Old Town Books is excited to announce we will be matching donations dollar-for-dollar.

Last year, with Winnie, my first Homeward Trails foster dog, who I happily still run into at the bookstore.

I’ve been fostering dogs with Homeward Trails for the past year, in honor of my late and great Old Town Books shop dog, Scout.

Inaugural shop dog Scout at our Union Street location in 2018.

If you’re curious about fostering dogs, I can’t recommend it enough. I was a goner after reading 101 Rescue Puppies by local author, dog trainer, and foster-extraordinaire Kathy Callahan. Since then I’ve fostered more than 40 dogs, including mama’s and their babies.

Chapter and Story going home - two puppies with their new family! This was from my very first mama and litter, all with literary themed names, of course!

Just past the tail end of the month, we’re partnering again with our friends at Homeward Trails. Join us on Saturday, November 1st, for an event with author Melanie D.G. Kaplan for a discussion about her book Lab Dog: A Beagle and His Human Investigate The Surprising World of Animal Research

This morning event features an author conversation, plus bagels …and beagles! Meet some Envigo beagles and learn about how you can support animal welfare. 100% of the ticket price goes to Homeward Trails to support their work.

If you love books and dogs as much as we do, I hope you’ll join us at the shop this month. And if you’re looking to find your own new best friend? Drop me a DM on Instagram @oldtownbooks. I always seem to be swimming in puppies lately.

Willow, one of my puppy fosters from September. By the time this blog post goes live, I’m sure she’ll have been snapped up - just look at those little eyebrows!
