How do you think about creating a welcoming experience for everyone who walks through the door? Coming from the hospitality world I always want to make sure customers are happier when they leave than when they entered. This often means tailoring the experience depending on what they are looking for, some folks want to talk about all the books they are reading and leave with a stack of books picked specifically for them, while others want space and to just soak up the vibes of the store. What would you suggest someone try if they’re wanting to get more into reading? Try a new format! Audiobooks are my current favorite format because they work with my brain! I find when I try to read on my phone or Kindle I don’t retain the story the same way, so I default to audio or physical and it makes reading a way more enjoyable experience. How many books do you read a year, and how? I average about 150 books a year, which feels wild. But I also primarily listen to my books, and I listen at double speed, which helps me listen to a lot more. Listening at double speed is how I actually get myself to pay attention to the audiobook and not let my mind wander. I’m also usually listening to a book at work if I’m not on the floor or in a meeting. Because of their support, we’re up to more than 70,000 followers on Facebook and nearly 30,000 on Instagram. We started Chapter Chasers Book Club to share hidden gem early chapter book series with emerging readers (6-8). Learning to read is so cool! And it can also be tiring. My hope with this book club is to motivate our growing readers by offering a special time to relate to peer readers and have fun! We will start each book club with a song and a short discussion about the book we read. Then, I will read aloud from a picture book that touches on something we discussed, and end our 45 minute time with a related activity. Disability Pride Month celebrates the anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), a law that gives civil rights to people with disabilities. The ADA says that people with disabilities have the right to live, work, and go to school with everyone else. It says they have the right to go anywhere non-disabled people go. Halloween has the massive amounts of plastic dross that ends up fossilized in landfills, sure (plus ghosts or whatever), but NaNoWriMo? That's some really scary stuff. It gives me the chills. The cold-sweat-panic-attack variety. I’m one of those writers who works themselves up into a lather over extremely ambitious self-imposed deadlines. But does that stop me from doing NaNo every year? Certainly not! It reminds me of a line from a Gillian Welch song: “Of all of ways I could hurt myself, you are my favorite one.” Is this the definition of insanity, doing the same thing and expecting different results? No, dear, it isn't. I'm perfectly aware I am starting November with conviction, wide-eyed and inspired to hit my word counts every day. It's the definition of ~masochism~. I love NaNoWriMo. I love the community, the hope, the fun of just giving it a go. I've never actually completed the challenge, but that certainly won't stop me from trying again this year.
