Introducing Old Town Books Junior’s book clubs!
Over summer break, the Old Town Books Junior team has been dreaming up and planning events to carry us through the end of 2025 for kids of all ages and interests — including book clubs!
Keep reading to meet each of our leaders, learn more about each book club and check out our September selections
Chapter Chasers Book Club
Hi, my name is Adela and I am leading our new Chapter Chasers Book Club! On the third Sunday of each month, I am excited to invite 6-8 year olds chasing the thrill of reading their first chapter books to chat, read aloud, and get creative! Our September pick is Bibsy Cross and the Bad Apple by Liz Garton Scalon.
I love seeing the sense of accomplishment as kids tackle their first independent reads! We started Chapter Chasers Book Club to share hidden gem early chapter book series with emerging readers (6-8). Learning to read is so cool! And it can also be tiring. My hope with this book club is to motivate our growing readers by offering a special time to relate to peer readers and have fun!
We will start each book club with a song and a short discussion about the book we read. Then, I will read aloud from a picture book that touches on something we discussed, and end our 45 minute time with a related activity. I would love if by participating, kids will think of themselves as readers and get more curious about other stories out there they could explore!
Once Upon a Book Club
Hi, my name is Kai and I run Once Upon a Book Club! We are excited to welcome back kids ages 8-12 to our middle grade fantasy book club where we explore wild tales about dragons, monsters, ghosts, witches, and the brave, and impressive kids who deal with them from diverse backgrounds and authors.
We meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:00pm in Old Town JR under the tree and talk about the things we loved, hated, lesson we learned, what we would have done differently, and have even gotten movie/musical scripts written by attendees. Sometimes we have the authors visit or send swag too!
In September, we will be reading The Incorruptibles by Lauren Magaziner, set in a world filled with amazing technology, evil sorcerers, an almost magical school, filled with kids ready to battle evil!
Reading Past Bedtime Book Club
Hi, my name is Kathryn and I lead the Reading Past Bedtime Book Club!
We love exciting, thoughtful books that keep us turning pages and asking for just five more minutes or time for one more chapter! One month we'll read an adventure, the next month we'll read a mystery, so there's always something new.
We meet the fourth Thursday of the month at 6pm and our selections are geared toward 9-13 year-olds. Ever read a book so good you can't wait to talk about it? Come join us! We can't wait to hear what you think about our September read: Junius Leak and the Spiraling Vortex of Doom! (Did we mention pirates sometimes make an appearance in our books?)
As a reader, I am up for almost anything, and I definitely don't want to feel like I'm reading the same type of book over and over. Reading Past Bedtime Book Club is a great chance for me to encourage young readers who love trying something new, and new readers who haven't found what they're looking for yet! I bring a lot of questions to our discussions but so does our group! We love to hear about different reactions and connections to characters and events--and sometimes our books make us think about what's going on outside the pages, too!
In addition to these fun book clubs for kids, we also have quite a few author events that we’re excited to host this fall including:
Our Camp Bookworm discussion to talk about The Sherlock Society (8/25)
An evening of trivia with Matthew Landis, author of National Archive Hunters (9/27)
and more!
Check out our full events calendar to see what other authors events and activities we have planned for both kids and adults.
